This garden space surrounding a modern terraced property in the heart of Edinburgh, was designed to have a modern take on an arts and crafts garden. The client hoped to create a lovely patio terrace wrapped around by a variety of seasonal planting, that would draw them out from their lovely new sunroom extension.

They were looking for a feeling of greater space in what was a small L-shaped plot, now that their sunroom extension had been built.

A network of narrow paths, designed to be taken slowly, were created to migrate around the garden, connecting at three locations to the main terrace. Directly across from the main patio is a second informal terrace with waterbowl/firepit. The structure of these areas was created using curving concrete walls. As well as looking great and dividing up the space, they also act as a temporary place to sit!

Creating outdoor space

With a new build property you are rarely starting from scratch and beneficial and non-beneficial elements already exist. As always, we work with all of them to bring together a better outdoor space. Again, no skips were required on this project, and the new garden was constructed in as sustainable way as we could. (Everthing in the ‘before’ photo is still there).

Strong shapes and structures go a long way to helping create a great space for the softer elements

Soil structure is equally important and worth keeping and improving rather than replacing.

All about balance

Whatever it is, it’s about how the elements work together.

Creating a long line of site

Creating features and spaces along the path brings practicality as well as a feeling of greater space. It also goes a long way to adding interest and depth to the garden. As the side area captures morning sun, a casual seating area has been created by the raised herb beds beside the back door. Perfect for that morning cuppa.
