“The best designs often are the simplest.”

We always seek to achieve this!

Design and build

Over 20 years of garden design and build I have created many garden spaces and always learning as I do. I like to remain hands-on, as the best information about the new garden space always comes from working in it. You discover so much about its environment and how it interacts, from the smallest elements to the biggest! This all goes a long way towards informing and improving the initial design.

With ongoing client discussions about works based on this evolving approach and awareness. Ideas about how best to implement the initial agreed design can develop along with it. A richer, better integrated garden is the result.

You can speculate about likely scenarios, but until you start digging, you only know so much.

We always stay true to the initial concept design, as you can see - concept designs completed.

Garden Designer/Project Manager

My name is Dug MacLeod. I created Stone Wood Water Light (aka ‘dugdigs’) in 1998 after working for several years for an established Edinburgh landscape designer/contractor. I have experienced the creation of a lot of great gardens, along with a lot of unnecessary waste within the design and construction processes.

When I subsequently started up my own garden design and construction business, it began with a ‘new from old’ ethos. This basically involves working with what already exists in the garden before introducing anything new. Since that time, I have continued developing my design and build skills along with my ecological awareness, to create ever more sustainable and desirable garden spaces for all. Whether that’s for our clients or indeed the surrounding wildlife.

Acquiring a Masters in Environmental Decision Making has played an important role in this whole process. We remain small, multi-skilled and increasingly sustainable in our approach to designing and building distinctive garden landscapes, that flourish.

With Stone Wood Water Light, who designs your garden project will also be directly involved in constructing it … and then planting it.

This hands-on approach from start to finish allows the garden projects to be flexible, cohesive, adaptive and sustainable. Which combined together and done well, also means cost-effective.

Our ethos - We believe in sustainability. From initial design ideas right through to the final construction touches, we consider the ecological benefits and impacts of what we do, and always seek to find the right balance. Involving our clients in an open and iterative process built upon trust, allows for the greatest success in achieving this.
