Traditional walled garden, Edinburgh

Everything for this project needed to go through the house. So it was designed so very little went out the house; just an old shed and greenhouse.

New from old

The client wanted to get rid of the greenhouse and the old shed and to have a lovely new cedar summerhouse in their place. The greenhouse and shed were recycled and the newly constructed summerhouse tucked neatly in beside a lovely mature Photinia, shaped to allow room for both.

Creating shapes

This design layout creates spaces for existing lawn and planting along with a new summerhouse, patio terrace, bike store, leaf mould bin and compost as well as a woodland patio area at the far end.

Find the balance

Because everything had to go through this old Edinburgh terraced house, finding a balance within the design that mitigated this and its impacts was important. To help achieve this the same balance needed to be found between keeping the best of the original garden and creating the new garden.

Where old meets new

Working well with what already exists is an important skill.
